Ebooks for science and engineering

A guide to finding and using ebooks relevant to science and engineering

Ebooks available via Discovery

The library catalogue is a great place to start your search for ebooks, however you may find additional ebooks using Discovery.

Discovery searches across many databases which provide access to ebooks and ebook chapters (some of which are not indexed in the library catalogue), including:

  • eBook Collection (EBSCOHost),
  • Academic Search Complete
  • Computers & Applied Sciences Complete
  • Science Direct
When you conduct a search in Discovery, some of your search results may be ebooks, and you can refine your results to just ebooks: see below for step-by-step instructions.

Finding ebooks in Discovery

To search for ebooks in Discovery:

1. Do a search using Discovery

  • Go to the library homepage.
  • Type your search terms in the Discovery search box at the top of the page and click the Search button.
  • Log in using your unimelb username and password (if you are prompted to do so).

2. Refine your results to ebooks

  • In the Refine your results section to the left, tick the Full Text checkbox and click the Update button.
  • In the Source Types section, tick the checkboxes: Books and eBooks and click the Update button.
  • Then any ebooks that match your search query will be listed in the search results.

Optionally, you can also narrow your search to just ebooks from the library catalogue:

  • In the Location section, tick the checkbox: Online Books & Journals

3. Read or download ebooks

To access the full-text of an e-book you will need to click the link below the search result, such as a:

  • PDF Full TextHTML Full Text, or View this record from... link
  • Source it @ Melbourne link
  • eBook Full Text or Download (Offline) link (for eBooks provided by EBSCOHost).
