Essential information for new users of the Library.

Borrowing

You can borrow up to 100 items (with a few exceptions) by using your student or staff card.

Loan periods vary from 2 hours to 90 days, and most items can be renewed up to 10 times. Two-hourly and Overnight loans cannot be renewed, and items requested via BONUS+ can only be renewed once.

Key textbooks and recommended readings are set aside for students and staff in the High Use collection on limited loan periods.

Renew your books online or return your books on time to avoid fines.

You cannot borrow if you have overdue books or fines of $25 or greater.

Looking for a specific title?

  1. Use the library catalogue to search for books. 
  2. Search by the title or author by using the dropdown menu on the left and selecting 'Title' or 'Author'. If you are searching by author, please input "Surname, First name".
  3. Once you have found the book click on its title to see more details.
  4. Check whether a copy of the book is available.
  5. To find out where the book is located, click on the location code next to the call number. 

 

Browsing for books on a topic?

  1. Use the library catalogue to search for books. 
  2. Do a keyword search by checking that the dropdown menu on the left is set to 'Keyword'.
  3. Once you have found the book click on its title to see more details.
  4. Check whether a copy of the book is available.
  5. To find out where the book is located, click on the location code next to the call number.

You can return your items at any one of our libraries through self-service returns machines while the library is open or through an external returns chute after hours.

You should return items before or on the day they are due, or renew the item if possible.

CAVAL Card 

A Caval card allows you to borrow in person from Victorian Universities and most TAFEs. For more information on CAVAL borrowing, visit their website

Find books in other libraries through Trove, which looks through the catalogues of many libraries across Australia

BONUS+

Request books from other universities through the BONUS+ catalogue and collect them from any Unimelb branch library. Visit our webpage on BONUS+ for more info.

Inter-library loans

Graduate students, some final year undergraduate students, and University of Melbourne staff can request books and journal articles through the Library's Inter-library loans service. There are links to the request forms in Discovery, via the library homepage, or you can access the forms here.
