Ethics information

Does my creative practice research project require ethics approval?

Research projects, and parts of research projects, that involve gathering information about humans and/or organisations that are conducted during a research Honours, a Masters by Research, a coursework Masters with a research component, or a PhD at the Faculty may require ethics approval.

Projects that involve any of the following are likely to require ethics approval:

Interviews
Surveys and questionnaires
Audio or video recording
Using archived data in which individuals are identifiable
Photography of people
Performances involving others
Study or research in illegal activities
Access to an individual’s personal documents or information.

Projects for which only information that is freely available in the public domain is used, or that are purely observational and non-interactive, are unlikely to require ethics approval.

iDARE stems from the project: Developing new approaches to ethics and research integrity training through challenges posed by Creative Practice Research, investigating new ways of supporting ethical know-how and creative practice research for higher degree research candidates, supervisors, academics and ethics administrators.

The aim of this research is to develop a robust and innovative ethics culture in creative arts and design practices within University research settings. It will examine how the ethics experience in the University setting can best accommodate research in creative practice and design; best prepare PhD/HDR candidates and academic researchers for a professional practice outside the academy and engender the acquisition of ‘ethical know-how’ that will enable graduates to negotiate ethical challenges in their careers.

Attended by over 200 people, it was a day of presentations and discussion hosted by out three organisations, Live Art Development Agency, Artsadmin, Home Live Art and produced in collaboration with Platform. We commissioned Mary Paterson to create a written response to the event and Ana Matos to create a short film of the day. This documentation represents the culmination of our collective work on ethical funding issues over the previous two years (supported by Arts Council England’s Catalyst programme) and we are delighted to make it widely available to everyone who is engaged with these issues.

From the first newsreels, to the latest Virtual Reality installations, non-fiction creators are the first to introduce their audiences and users to novel ways of interacting, immersing and collaborating in new environments while interpreting reality. How can these new technologies change the documentary creator’s relationship to the “people formerly known as subjects”? How can new models of co-creation redefine not just the form of the story itself but the methods by which we create them? How can documentaries be made “with” people instead of “about” them? This panel examines the history and potential for documentarians to co-create with citizens, social scientists, technologists and performing artists, with the aim to both create artful meaning and foster concrete political action.

This transdisciplinary symposium will explore the role ethics plays in built environment research, and consider ways of working between principle and procedure, intersecting with questions of justice, politics and morality.
Through talks and roundtables held over two days, speakers, discussants and chairs will tackle topics such as big data, fossil fuel, housing and regeneration, and address issues concerning professional responsibility, confidentiality, consent, risk and vulnerability.

This forum brings together a number of artists whose work sits in this space to address questions related to power and accountability within community arts practice. In particular it will discuss the ethical responsibility of artists to the wider communities they practice within, and to the artists’ individual ‘subjects’ who are left to deal with the aftermath of the ‘attention’ of researchers and artists.
The forum will be chaired by Dr James Oliver (VCA and MCM, University of Melbourne) with a brilliant cast of speakers including: Dr Kate Just (VCA and MCM, University of Melbourne), Tal Fitzpatrick (University of Melbourne), Juliana Keller (University of Melbourne), Professor David Cross (Deakin University), and Dr Lucas Ihlein (University of Wollongong).
This project has been funded by an Ethics and Integrity Development Scheme grant through the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity, The University of Melbourne.

This book investigates new ethical issues arising through art and science collaboration and considers the roles and responsibilities of the artists, scientists and institutions involved. The projects decribed raise interesting questions for science ethics committees and help to reveal the mechanisms that drive this usually hidden process, enabling readers to understand the driving forces behind ethical decisions and the role of artists working in scientific settings more deeply. The project "Trust Me I'm an Artist: Towards an Ethics of Art/Science Collaboration" was created by artist Anna Dumitriu and Professor Bobbie Farsides (Chair of Ethics, Brighton and Sussex Medical School) in collaboration with Waag Society and The University of Leiden. The book features projects by Adam Zaretsky, Neal White, Anna Dumitriu and Art Orienté objet.

Australia Council Children in Art Protocols

The Australia Council has developed a set of protocols for artists working with children.
The protocols address the depiction and employment of children in artworks, exhibitions and publications that receive Australia Council funding. They apply to all Australia Council grants from 1 January 2009.
The protocols include an overview of applicable state and territory laws, which form the basis for a set of reasonable minimum standards to help artists and organisations who work with children do so with proper care and responsibility.

Applicants working with Indigenous Australian artists, who are funded by the grant assessment panels of the Australia Council, are required to adhere to the Indigenous Cultural protocol guides published by the Council as a condition funding.
