Correcting links to online content

There may be cases where links to online content imported using RIS or Reference Manager files may be broken, incorrect or inactive.  Links to openly accessible resources from the internet may also be rendered inactive.

You can correct broken links by replacing them with active URLs by following the steps below.  You can also replace existing files with better quality scans using the following steps.

  1. Firstly, locate the reading which with the broken, incorrect or inactive link.
  2. Click on the 'Edit this reading' button.
  3. Click on the 'Choose new reading file or link' button.
  4. In the 'Change reading link/file' box, click on the Link button if you are replacing a broken link, or click on File button if you are replacing an old file or a broken link with a file.  Please note:  replacing a broken link or an existing file with new file will need to be reviewed by the Readings Online team, and may not be immediately available to students.
  5. If you are replacing a broken link, cut and paste the correct link into the Link box.  Instructions on how to generate a stable link from different electronic databases can be found here.  If you are replacing a broken link with a file, click on the Select a file button and navigate to the location of the new file on your computer.   
  6. Enter the reason you are requesting a change of file or link in the Reason for change field (e.g. broken link) and click on the Update button on the upper right hand side of the screen.
  7. Check that the file or link has been successfully replaced by clicking on the View or Download the reading button.
