Research Skills for Fine Arts and Music Students

Know your citation style. Different citation styles have different requirements, and it helps to know at the beginning which one you should be using.

Which citation style?

Your citation style can depend on the requirements of your school or discipline area. Citation styles used by the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music are:

  • Chicago A (footnotes and bibliography)
  • Chicago B (author-date/in-text)
  • APA (author-date/in-text)

Check with your coordinator or supervisor if you're not sure which style you should be using.

Footnotes or Author-Date?

There are two distinct ways to cite resources in your writing. It is important to be clear which style you're using.

  • Chicago A requires individual footnotes for each citation, with a bibliography at the end of the document.
  • Chicago B and APA require references to be placed within the text in parentheses, with a reference list of all resources at the end.

Examples of how to include references in all three styles can be found on Re:cite
