Archived - Readings Online User Guide

Guide for academic staff using Readings Online.

Add readings manually

  1. Login to the LMS and open subject page.
  2.  Click on the link for Readings Online. (see Linking Readings Online to Canvas for the first time, if guidance is needed.)
  3. Click on the Asterisk button from the drop-down menu and click on the appropriate reading format. The example shown is for a book. (For more information on what to include in different reading types see Add readings FAQ)

  1. Enter in the Scheduling details. (See dot points 12-13 of Adding readings: By searching in the Readings Online database if you are unsure of what to do here.)
  2. Each reading, regardless of format is broken into two columns:
    1. Source- Where the reading comes from is the left column.
    2. The Reading- The material that students will be accessing is the right column.

  1. Fill in the sections where there is an asterix. If unsure put in a 0, the program will send an error message via email if these areas are not filled in.
  2. Genre means type of reading. There are a range of options, when you click on the drop-down menu, such as Chapter.
  3. Kind means the method of communication, for the reading. 
    1. Link is the preferred option. (Please see Readings Online and Copyright for further information and Deep Linking).
    2. File can only be used if there isn't a copyright compliant link, (Please see Readings Online and Copyright for further information.) or if using Perusall or Feedback Fruits. 
    3. Locate can be used when a reading cannot be found or if staff are unsure on how to link to a reading. 
  4. Click on Submit.

  1. A green banner will flash up noting that the request has been received.
  2. Once the reading is processed, it will appear in the Ungrouped readings folder, with a blue Submitted tab over it.

  1. Reading should be available within 24 hours. 
  2. Test the link by clicking on the World icon, above the reading.

  1. Do not forget to click on the Publish button, when students require access to the reading. (See diagram at the bottom of Add readings by searching, point 18, if you are unsure of where this button is).
  2. The Readings Online software may send you out an automated email. If assistance is required in understanding the email please look at View reading status page under the Manage readings tab. If assistance is still required please email readings-online@unimelb.edu.au

A link to an electronic resource 

  • Will be ‘Active’ if the availability period has started or ‘Pending’ .
  • Test link by clicking on the globe icon.

PDF file 

  • Will be reviewed for copyright compliance. 
  • This usually takes 48 hours but may be longer in peak periods
  • Once approved, test that the document opens correctly.
