Essential information for new users of the University of Melbourne Library.

How do I borrow from the Library?

 

Answer: Using your Unimelb ID, you can borrow from any of our libraries.

Remember, if you need more help, you can speak to us online or in person at our library desks.

Borrowing rules

You can borrow up to 100 items (with a few exceptions) by using your student or staff card.

Key textbooks and recommended readings are set aside for students and staff in the High Use collection on limited loan periods.

Loan periods vary from 2 hours to 90 days, and most items can be renewed up to 10 times. Two-hourly and Overnight loans cannot be renewed, and items requested via BONUS+ can only be renewed twice.

Renew your books online or return your books on time to avoid fines.

You cannot borrow if you have overdue books or fines of $25 or greater.

How to find a book

 

Looking for a specific book?

  1. Use the library catalogue to search for books. 
  2. Search by the title or author by using the dropdown menu on the left and selecting 'Title' or 'Author'. If you are searching by author, please input "Surname, First name".
  3. Once you have found the book click on its title to see more details.
  4. Check whether a copy of the book is available.
  5. To find out where the book is located, click on the location code next to the call number. 

 

Browsing for books on a topic?

  1. Use the library catalogue to search for books. 
  2. Do a keyword search by checking that the dropdown menu on the left is set to 'Keyword'.
  3. Once you have found the book click on its title to see more details.
  4. Check whether a copy of the book is available.
  5. To find out where the book is located, click on the location code next to the call number. 

 

How to borrow a book

 

You can use your University of Melbourne student or staff card to borrow books yourself at one of the self-checkout machines. If you require assistance or don't have your University ID card on you, our library staff are happy to help you - come and see us at a library help desk.
