Alternative search engines

Using alternative search engines to Google, may find you results that the google search did not retrieve, and may feature different ways of sorting and filtering your results.

Dogpile is a meta search engine; it runs searches over a number of different search engines (including Google) and gives you all the results at once.

Yahoo is a search engine and also provides its traditional directory of sites, compiled by humans.

AllTheWeb is another popular rival to Google which will give good, relevant results.

Bing is Microsoft's Search Engine, featuring good travel information, a convenient preview pane and a sophisticated visual/image search,

Search engines that look for people

USSearch (was Spock/Intelius) - Gets good results, will show any contact and some biographical information about an individual that is online.

 

Video Search

Google Video search - Google specific Video search

Youtube searches the vast Youtube site for videos, with a range of complex filters. Youtube only searches the videos on the Youtube website, it does not search the web

When you run your search, you can select the filters at the top left. This will give you a range of options to filter your results, including:

  • Duration
  • Time
  • Features
  • Quality
  • Close caption options

 

Photo and Image searching

FlickrYou can search the Flickr site for photos and images, including creative commons images.
