Researchers and academic staff are often asked to demonstrate the impact of their research in applications for academic promotions, grant applications and in many other contexts.
Research output metrics, though not without limitations, can help form part of a broader research impact narrative:
- they typically measure publications such as articles, books and book chapters
- can be divided into author, article and journal metrics. There are also metrics that can assist in benchmarking (for example, within particular research fields or disciplines)
- include citation counts, journal impact factors, and h-index, amongst others indicators
