Article Level Metrics
- Scopus Article MetricsTo view article level metrics in Scopus, click any of your search results to view the article details and then click the "View all metrics" link at the bottom right. Scopus provides citation metrics, as well as altmetrics in four categories:
Scholarly Activity - Downloads and posts in scholarly research tools such as Mendeley and CiteULike.
Social Activity - Mentions on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Google +.
Scholarly Commentary - Reviews, articles and blogs by experts or scholars, from platforms such as F1000 Prime, research blogs, and Wikipedia.
Mass Media - Coverage in the mass media, such as newspapers.

- Web of ScienceIn Web of Science, as well as the citation count, the 'Usage Count' is now provided for each article, for the last 180 days and since 2013. The 'Usage Count' is the count of the number of times the full text of a record has been accessed or a record has been saved. You can also sort your search results by usage count.
- PLOS Article-Level Metrics (ALMs)Article-Level Metrics are freely available for every article published by PLOS (Public Library of Science) and include: PLOS and PubMed page views and downloads, Mendeley and CiteULike bookmarks, citation counts, social network data, discussion on social media and PLOS notes, comments and ratings.
- PLOS Impact ExplorerA free service that mashes up metrics from Altmetric with articles from the Public Library of Science (PLOS).
You can use it to browse articles with the most buzz. - KudosA platform that allows researchers, publishers and institutions to maximise the visibility and impact of their published work. Researchers ‘claim’ publications and are then prompted to provide a layman’s explanation and to support them with links to supporting information such as datasets. This provides a package to more effectively ‘share’ on social media. Once a researcher claims a publication they can view metrics for it, including the number of views and full-text downloads, an altmetrics score and share referrals but these are only viewable by the researcher. Kudos requires registration but is free for researchers. There are costs for publishers and institutions.
- CrossRefCrossRef is the official Digital Object Identifier (DOI) Registration agency of the international DOI foundation. DOIs act as unique identifiers making tracking usage and sharing of scholarly work much easier. CrossRef also provides a “cited by” service where participating publishers provide metadata for the works cited in their published works, allowing “cited by” lists to be created. CrossRef is free for researchers and libraries.
Databases and eJournals with embedded information from Altmetric
Many databases and e-journals now have Altmetric information embedded in the articles' pages.
Look out for an Altmetric box, Am score button, Article metrics link, or similar, and click through to view the full article-level metrics.
If a database or e-journal does not have embedded altmetric information, you can use the Altmetric bookmarklet.

- NatureView any article and click the 'Article metrics' link.
- BioMed Central JournalsView any article and click the 'Article metrics' link to the right, under the 'Associated material' heading.
- Taylor & Francis JournalsWhen viewing the details of a journal article, the number of views, and also citations counts from CrossRef, the Web of Science, and Scopus, and an Altmetric widget are displayed where relevant.
Peer review and article rating tools
- PaperCriticAllows anyone submit a review for a journal article, in an open and transparent environment.
If you are a researcher you can use it to monitor feedback about your work.
PaperCritic uses the Mendeley API and you can link your PaperCritic and Mendeley. accounts, and then rate and review any publication in your Mendeley library. Registration is free.
- F1000 PrimeF1000 Prime is a post-publication peer review service that comprehensively and systematically highlights and recommends the most interesting articles published in the biomedical sciences, based on the recommendations of a faculty of 5,000 of the world's leading scientists and clinical researchers, plus 5,000 associates who work with them. F1000 Prime is a combination of two earlier services: Faculty of 1000 Biology, and Faculty of 1000 Medicine.
- PublonsA platform that aims to “turn peer review into a measurable research output”. Reviewers create public profiles where they can import information about reviews they have conducted, be they blind, open or published. A free service for academics.
