Hawthorn English Language Students

This is a guide for Hawthorn English Language students for finding libraries and information at the University of Melbourne.

Using computers at the library

Using the Discovery database in University of Melbourne Libraries

What is Discovery?

Discovery is a database that covers many different subject areas and will allow you to search for electronic resources including journal articles, reports, newspaper articles and many other types of information sources.

Where can you use Discovery?

You can use Discovery within the University of Melbourne libraries using a guest computer. You do not need to login to the guest computers. Access to Discovery is from the library home page

Accessing full text of articles

Note: Full access to resources on Discovery is restricted to University of Melbourne students and staff. As Hawthorn students, you do not have full access and may be restricted to results that have a PDF icon only.

Discovery search results may indicate that there is a full text document attached to a record e.g. the icon.

Alternately the search may indicate a Find it @ UniMelb icon.

If you find a result with a PDF  icon, click on the icon and it will take you to the full text of the article.  You can then, read, print or download the article to a USB.

However, Discovery may also indicate items which are not held by the University of Melbourne, or may be not available online .  If you find a result with a Find It @ UniMelb Find it @ UniMelb icon, click on the icon to determine if we hold the item you are looking for.  Note that Find It @ UniMelb may direct you to print sources in addition to electronic sources.

Note: There is no wireless access to databases at the University of Melbourne.
