Rare East Asian Collection

The Rare East Asian Collection houses more than 20,000 volumes of titles in Chinese and Japanese languages ranging from the 17th century to the 21st century.

Collection items can be requested for viewing in the Special Collections Reading Room at Baillieu Library, Level 3.

Meiji Japan
Archived collection of Edward Sylvester Morse (1838-1925), one of the first Americans to live in Japan. Includes his drawings, diaries, and correspondence covering his interests in archaeology, art, astronomy, ethnology, religion and zoology, as well as his desire to encourage an American audience to appreciate Asian society and culture in Meiji period.
