Finding eBooks

  • Use a keyword search to find books and ebooks on a topic. Once you have completed a search you can limit your search to a specific collection such as, Giblin Eunson Library or format such as online books (login with your username and password to view e-books)
  • Only want an eBook? Choose the option 'Online books'  in the catalogue. To read an e-book, open the catalogue record and then select the link: Connect to electronic book.
  • Interested in requesting library books by mail? Check out the 'sourcing online and print resources' page
  • Searching in Discovery will also retrieve books and ebooks

Tips for building your searches

  • Construct simple search statements to find books- e.g. "mental health" AND (girls OR females)
  • Use more complex search statements within databases- e.g. ("mental health" OR "mental wellbeing") AND (girls OR females) AND "eating disorders"
  • Use truncation to extend search results - e.g. athlet* will retrieve athlete, athletes, athletics, athleticism.
  • Add "quotation marks" to retrieve a specific phrase.
  • Use the term OR to find synonyms or alternative terms- e.g. "physiological training" OR "physical training" OR "physical conditioning"
  • Use brackets around alternative terms to create order in your search - e.g. (nutrition OR diet) AND "health education"

Health Subject Headings

You will find subject headings in the records for resources. You can use them in two ways: use them as browsing links or incorporate them into your search strategies to get more consistent results.

Look for sections labelled 'keywords', 'descripters' or 'subject headings' in database records.

Further borrowing options

Can't find the book or article you need?

Don't worry! We have several options to help you access resources beyond our University collections.

  • Request through Inter-library Loan (ILL): If we don't own the resource you need, you can request it through our Inter-library Loan service. We'll source it from another library, and books will be delivered to the University of Melbourne Library for collection. Articles are usually sent to you electronically.
  • Search Australian Libraries via TROVE: Use TROVE to find copies of books and resources available in libraries across Australia.
  • Borrow from Other Victorian Universities (CAVAL Scheme): Get a CAVAL card to borrow books in person from other university libraries across Victoria. Just visit a participating library with your CAVAL card to access their collections.
  • Borrow from Interstate Libraries (ULANZ Scheme): If you live outside Victoria, the ULANZ borrowing scheme allows you to borrow from participating university libraries in Australia and New Zealand. Simply register at the university library you wish to borrow from.
  • Suggest a Purchase: Would you like us to consider adding a book to our collection? Submit a request using the Orders Request form.
