Finding eBooks

  • Only want an eBook? Choose the option 'Online books'  in the catalogue. To read an e-book, open the catalogue record and then select the link: Connect to electronic book.
  • Interested in requesting library books by mail? Check out the 'sourcing online and print resources' page
  • Searching in Discovery will also retrieve books and ebooks

Searching Tips

Keyword searching

To find books on a particular subject, use a keyword search on the library catalogue. Keyword searching often retrieves a large number of results. You might need to narrow your search by adding further keywords.

  • When searching by keyword use distinctive words that describe the information you are looking for.
  • Use quotation marks to search for phrases
  • If you retrieve too many results, try modifying your search by adding more terms
  • Use the term 'OR' to combine synonyms or alternative terms

Using the catalogue fields

As you search, use the information contained in the catalogue fields to determine if something is of interest. The Author, Call Number, and Subject fields are hyperlinked to enable you to move quickly around the catalogue to look for related information.

Using Subject Headings

Subject headings list the subject descriptions that have been applied to the resource. Click on any of these examples to complete a subject search in the library catalogue.

Further borrowing options

Can't find the book or article you need?

Don't worry! We have several options to help you access resources beyond our University collections.

  • Request through Inter-library Loan (ILL): If we don't own the resource you need, you can request it through our Inter-library Loan service. We'll source it from another library, and books will be delivered to the University of Melbourne Library for collection. Articles are usually sent to you electronically.
  • Search Australian Libraries via TROVE: Use TROVE to find copies of books and resources available in libraries across Australia.
  • Borrow from Other Victorian Universities (CAVAL Scheme): Get a CAVAL card to borrow books in person from other university libraries across Victoria. Just visit a participating library with your CAVAL card to access their collections.
  • Borrow from Interstate Libraries (ULANZ Scheme): If you live outside Victoria, the ULANZ borrowing scheme allows you to borrow from participating university libraries in Australia and New Zealand. Simply register at the university library you wish to borrow from.
  • Suggest a Purchase: Would you like us to consider adding a book to our collection? Submit a request using the Orders Request form.
