Ovid Basic search

When do I use Basic Search?

Basic Search is useful for a quick overview of a topic.

It is NOT recommended for any searching you need control.

For most searches, such as for literature reviews and systematic reviews, Advanced search is recommended.

You want a quick overview of literature on

Search

  1. Advanced search is the default when you open the database, move to Basic.

  2. Type your search terms in the box, don't use AND/OR.

  3. By default the box Include Related Terms will be ticked. Ovid will interpret your search (a bit like google) by looking for alternate spellings (US vs UK spelling) and similar words.

  4. Your search history will appear at the top of the page.

View results

  1. This is what Ovid has searched for using Related Terms. This can be useful for identifying alternative keywords

  2. Your search terms are highlighted in yellow, related terms in purple

  3. Ovid show results based on relevance, if you are not interested in older articles you can limit by date.
