New Students' Library Guide

Your introduction to Library services, spaces and resources at the University of Melbourne.

What online resources can I find?

The library provides you with access to a wide variety of different online resources. These include:

  • Journal articles
  • Ebooks
  • Images
  • Government documents and reports
  • Standards
  • News and newspapers

Using Discovery

Discovery is the Library’s search engine. It searches thousands of databases the University subscribes to, as well as our print resources. You can find Discovery on the Library website.

Finding full text journal articles

Use Discovery to quickly find full-text, peer-reviewed articles. The filter options will help return relevant results:

The search results will include information about the article and links to where you can access the full text version to read, download or print. You can also explore the subjects linked to the article to find more articles on the same topic.

Top tips for searching

  • Experiment with your search terms and filters to improve the quality of your results
  • The Library Guides can give you alternative suggestions for specialist databases to search for your topics
  • Library staff can help you with your search query if you're not getting the results you need
  • The Research Essentials guide introduces more details on how to search academic databases

Does it matter where I search?

When doing research at university, you may be using some research platforms for the first time. If you're not sure what the difference is between using Google to search and searching using academic databases, the Comparing Search Pathways library guide gives you an overview of commonly used search platforms, and how their results can differ.
