New Students' Library Guide

Your introduction to Library services, spaces and resources at the University of Melbourne.

Visit our branches

We have 10 libraries that each specialise in different subject areas. You can visit any library to browse the collections or find a place to study. Think of the library as your office - it's a place set up for you to study, access resources and connect with specialist help.

Opening hours vary throughout the year. Some libraries also have After Hours Study Zones which you can access with your student or staff card.

Find a seat

Use the Find a Study Space page to check how busy your favourite library space is.

This page shows real time information about seating capacity per floor and includes floor plans and descriptions of the spaces. Some library spaces get extremely busy during peak times.

Book a space

Book a project room for group work, recording pod, or computer in our libraries.

The Find a Study Space page lists the bookable resources in each library space, with a link to our booking systems for making reservations.

What will I find in the library?

Beyond books and friendly staff, most of our libraries contain:

Printers and Multi-Function Devices (MFDs): Available in every major University library (including Baillieu, ERC, Giblin Eunson, Law, Southbank, Burnley and Werribee libraries). For instructions on printing, scanning and photocopying, visit Student Print

Bookable computers: There are different types of computers available for student and staff use in the libraries.

  • Express: 30-minutes walk-up only (if all are in use, you can join the virtual queue).
  • Standard: 3-hours walk-up or booked. These can be booked using BookIT.

Extended Display Monitors: Most branches (Baillieu, Giblin Eunson, ERC, Architecture, Law) have monitors with a keyboard and mouse that can be booked for 3 hrs via BookIT.  You can use these to connect your laptop for a larger or additional display.  The connection cable has a USB-C connection.  If your device does not have a USB-C port you will need to bring an appropriate adapter.

Project Rooms: These are available for staff and students for a period of up to 2 hours per person per day. Capacity of the room is indicated in DIBs (see the number indicated in parenthesis). Some rooms come equipped with a LCD screen (bring your own laptop) and whiteboard.

Study booths: The majority have LCD screens (bring your own laptop) and can accommodate 4 people at a time. They are available for staff and students for a period of 2 hours per person per day.

Participatory Study Spaces: These are spaces within the library where you may participate in online classes/tutorials. Please remember to bring your headphones to use while participating in your online session.

Study rooms for graduates: These are smaller rooms which are suited to private, individual study. You must be a graduate student to use of these rooms. They can be booked for a period of up to 2 hours at a time.

Self-service recording facilities: There are self-service recording rooms, pods and booths throughout three of our libraries (Baillieu, Giblin Eunson, Southbank). These facilities include: a Rodecaster Pro console, 2 Rode Podcaster mics on boom stands, and 2 Beyerdynamic DT770 (250 Ohm) headphones.

Media booths (Southbank): The Southbank library has 4 booths available for media playback. All booths have a DVD player and CD player. Booth 1 has a cassette tape player, and a record player. Booth 4 has an Xbox 360.

You can find more information about library facilities in each branch, and book spaces and computers on the Library Room and Computer Booking Options page.
