A surveillance study collects, analyses and interprets health data from a specific population over time. The aim is to monitor trends, patterns and outbreaks and therefore inform public health planning, policy development and intervention evaluation. Data is often collected from sources such as healthcare providers. Examples might include monitoring infectious disease incidence through health department reports or tracking chronic disease trends via national health surveys.
